On Monday evening, Steins faced a stiff test, when the visitors to Allandale, were Garrowhill from Glasgow, who were looking for the three points to get them into a playoff position in the league.
Steins, though were playing out of their skins and were beginning to taste the finishing line and knew that three points for themselves would give them a giant step towards the league title at long last, with only one game remaining on Wednesday night.
Steins started the game in top gear, with both Michael Easton & Ross Greenwell, proving to be a handful for the Garrowhill defence. Greenwell was providing the ammunition for Davy Gardiner, who was unlucky not to score himself on a number of occasions in the first half. Gardiners best chance, came on the half hour mark, when he burst through the Garrowhill defence, rounded the keeper, but from an acute angle, his shot was knocked off the line by a defender.
Minutes later, Gardiner was fouled in an aerial clash with the Garrowhill centre half, but the referee, played advantage as Michael Easton had pounced on the loose ball, rounded the advancing keeper and slotted the ball home to take Steins into an important lead, going in at half time.
The second half, was end to end football, with both teams giving their all. Stevie Stewart in goal though, was keeping the score sheet clean for Steins. Central defender Anthony O’Donnell was winning everything in the air, and Barry Stuart and David Sinclair were marshalling the midfield for Steins.
The game was settled though, with just twenty minutes remaining, when Gardiner burst through en route to goal, when a late tackle from the Garrowhill defender almost brought him down in the box, but the big man stayed up and tried to play on, but the ball had went out of play. Fair play to the referee though, who spotted the infringement and awarded the penalty.
Andrew McRoberts stepped up and fired home for Steins. A very important three points were in the bag.
