The opening match at Allandale for season 2010-11 was the Wallace Memorial Trophy betweem Steins Amateurs and Steins 21s. The trophy is played for in memory of the former Steins player Roddy Wallace who was tragically killed many years ago at the park.
The pitch was in great shape after the summer works and all was set up for a tremendous match between the two senior teams at the Club.
Both squads were a little short on personnel and the 21s lined up with Kano in goal, a back three of Marky, Mope and Jamie Ray, a central five of Gordon Stewart, Gaz, Sneddy, Barry and Robbie McNab, with Blackshaw and Wee Zak up top.
It was clear from the off that the 21s were keen to take the 1st Club trophy back off the Amateurs as they started at a high tempo. Zak and Stevie Blackshaw were to prove a constant thorn in the Ams side all night.
The first half ended with the 21s coming in 3-0 in front thanks to goals from Zak Nicoletti and Stevie Blackshaw (2). The central midfield trio of Wright, Lynn and Sneddon took a little time to settle but proved its worth with some excellent passages of play and some decisive passing into the wide areas. We Zak and Blackshaw were on top form and in the goals again (both having scored twice last Saturday).
At the start of the 2nd half the Amateurs rallied a bit and rolled their sleeves up. They created a number of reasonable chances with the Allandale slope and wind in their favour.
However despite a period of pressure by the Ams it was the 21s who went further ahead when Zal latched onto a long ball from Wee Marky to finish well for his 2nd and the 21s 4th of the game.
The Ams finally got a consolation goal but only after Stevie Blackshaw had capped off a great night for the Steins front pairing with a cool finish for his hat-trick.
All six of the subs got some playing time with Jason Gibson replacing Gaz in the centre, and Fraz, Gally, Andy McNiven and Welshy playing their part in an excellent victory for the 21s.
The 21s move on to another friendly on Saturday away to Balmore Amateurs in Douglas.
